How to Add a Grok Bot Template: Steps and Checks
Short answer: adding a Grok Bot template takes one link. Open the template’s x.ai/bot/… page, choose Add to Grok Bot, review the context and integrations it brings in the Grok Bot app, then click Add Bot. You get an independent copy on your account. You need the Grok Bot app to finish. (Sources: xAI docs, official x.ai templates guide)
What a Grok Bot template is
The official x.ai guide calls a template a recipe, not a clone. It packages a bot’s instructions, relevant memories, skills and some plugins so someone else can create their own version. Custom code and scripts are not included.
The docs add that adding a shared bot creates a copy on your account. It does not give you the creator’s computer, logins or conversation history.
Four steps to add a template
- Find the link. Public templates live at
https://x.ai/bot/…. Search all templates on Bests.one or browse by category; every “Add to Grok” button points to the official x.ai page. - Preview it on x.ai. Per the docs, a public link shows the bot’s identity, description, skills and routines. Read them first.
- Choose Add to Grok Bot. This opens the template in the Grok Bot app for review. Without the app you can’t finish.
- Review, then click Add Bot. Check that the context and integrations match what you expect, then add it. You now have a new copy of the bot.
Where the buttons are: Add to Grok Bot is on the x.ai template preview page; Add Bot is on the review screen that opens in the Grok Bot app, after you check the context and integrations.
Adding from Marketplace
The docs note that Marketplace in the Grok Bot sidebar also lists bots. Choose Add on a bot, or open it and choose Import Bot, to create your own copy from its template.
After you add it
- Plugins from the original bot come with the copy, but may need to be reinstalled.
- MCP servers, scripts and custom code are not included; follow the creator’s setup notes.
- Workflows that need API keys need your own keys.
Which services you reconnect depends on the template: the integrations listed on the review screen are the ones it uses. A template never carries the creator’s logins (xAI docs), so you connect those services with your own accounts.
Checklist before you install
The official guide says to evaluate templates like you would evaluate software. Before adding one, check:
- Who made it? Shared bots come from other users, not xAI, and adding one accepts the third-party bot terms.
- Do the description or routines send, publish or delete anything on their own?
- Are there integrations unrelated to the job?
- Does it ask you to paste secrets into the chat?
Want a simple one to start? Try the Operations category, such as Meeting Recap Deck or PM bot.
FAQ
Does adding a template change the creator’s bot?
No. You get a separate copy on your own account.
Do I need the Grok Bot app?
You can preview on x.ai in a browser, but the docs say you need the app to finish adding it.
Why won’t a Team-only link open?
Creators can share a Public link or a Team-only link. Team-only links open only for members of that team.
