Grok Bot glossary: Bot, template, skill, routine
Note: This page defines 12 common Grok Bot terms, paraphrased from xAI’s official docs and x.ai guides, with a source on each. New to Grok Bot? Start with What is a Grok Bot template.
- Grok Bot
- An AI product whose Bots complete work, rather than only answering questions. Bots can use a persistent cloud computer, connected tools, websites and files, keep working in the background, keep role-specific context and coordinate with other Bots. Desktop apps run on macOS, Windows and Linux, with companion apps on iOS and Android. (Official FAQ)
- Bot
- A durable AI teammate with a name, a job, its own conversation and working context that develops over time. The docs recommend giving each Bot one clear job. (Docs: Bots)
- Template
- A way to share a Bot as a recipe, not a clone. It packages the Bot’s instructions, relevant memories, skills and first-party plugins; whoever adds it gets their own separate copy. (x.ai templates guide; Docs: Bots)
- Skill
- A description of how to perform a task. The docs suggest testing a skill on a real one-time task before turning it into a routine. (Official FAQ)
- Routine
- Assigns a workflow to one Bot and tells it when to run: on a schedule or, where supported, after an event. Closing the app or laptop does not stop a routine. See how routines run. (Official FAQ)
- Memory
- A Bot can retain stable working preferences, important facts and summaries of past work. Memory is not a substitute for an authoritative source; for important decisions, ask the Bot to check current data. (Docs: Bots; Official FAQ)
- Plugin / integration
- External services a Bot connects to, such as GitHub. Templates carry first-party plugins, but you reinstall them after adding; MCP servers and custom scripts are not included. (x.ai templates guide)
- Connector
- A dedicated integration for a service. The docs advise using a connector when one exists, as it is more structured and reliable than driving the website. (Official FAQ)
- Cloud computer
- The persistent cloud computer where Bot work runs. There is one per account, and all Bots share its files, browser sessions and logins, so separate Bots are not a security boundary. (Official FAQ)
- Marketplace
- An entry in the Grok Bot sidebar listing Bots you can add. Choose Add, or open one and choose Import Bot, to create your own copy from its template. (Docs: Bots)
- Team Bot
- One Bot the whole team talks to, as opposed to a template, which gives each person their own copy to customize. (Docs: Bots; Official FAQ)
- Ask first rule
- An approval rule added in Auto-review settings. The docs recommend narrow Ask first rules for actions such as sending, publishing, deleting, purchasing or changing production systems, with standing limits in each Bot’s description. (Official FAQ)
