What is a Grok Bot template? Basics and setup

Short answer: A Grok Bot template is a recipe for a Bot, not a clone. It packages the Bot’s instructions, relevant memories, skills and first-party plugins. When someone adds it, they get their own separate Bot. Using one takes four moves: open the template link, choose Add to Grok Bot, review it and choose Add Bot, then reconnect plugins and give it a concrete task. (Sources: x.ai template guide, xAI docs)

What a Grok Bot is

The official docs define a Bot as a durable AI teammate with a name, a job, its own conversation, and working context that develops over time. They recommend one clear job per Bot, such as Talent Scout, Expense Manager or Bug Reproduction, rather than a “General Helper”.

What a template is

The x.ai guide calls a template “a collection of skills, memories, and plugins” that lets you share your Bots and use Bots others built. Its analogy: a template is a recipe, not a meal. Two people with the same recipe end up with slightly different dishes.

What a template includes

What it leaves out

Use a template: from link to a working Bot

  1. Find a template link. Template links look like x.ai/bot/…. Browse Marketplace in the Grok Bot sidebar, or explore all templates on Bests.one by category.
  2. Open the preview and choose Add to Grok Bot. The link opens a preview on x.ai. You need the Grok Bot app to finish. Inside the app’s Marketplace you can choose Add, or open a Bot and choose Import Bot.
  3. Review it and choose Add Bot. The app lists the context and integrations the template brings. Check they match what you expect, then choose Add Bot. See the template safety checklist for what to look at.
  4. Reconnect plugins. Per the x.ai guide, the new Bot comes with the original plugins, but you have to reinstall them. MCP servers and custom scripts are not included; set them up following the creator’s notes.
  5. Set its job and limits. Use the Bot menu or Edit Profile to change its name and description. The docs suggest putting lasting rules in the description, such as “Never send external messages without approval.”
  6. Give it a concrete task. Start a conversation with a specific task and the Bot gets to work. Pin Bots you use often to keep them at the top of the sidebar.

FAQ

Does adding a template give me the creator’s data?

No. The docs say adding a shared Bot creates a copy on your account; it does not give you the creator’s computer, logins or conversation history.

Are templates made by xAI?

Not necessarily. The docs state shared Bots are created by other users, not by SpaceXSI, and adding one accepts the third-party Bot terms.

What if I no longer want it?

Hide it from the sidebar or delete it. Hiding does not pause its routines; deleting removes its profile, conversation and routines.
