Claude Code vs Cowork: which agent to use, from Anthropic's docs

Updated on

Claude Code vs Cowork is the choice between Anthropic's coding agent and its agent for knowledge work. This page puts them side by side using only what Anthropic publishes: who each one is for, where it runs, what it works on, how permissions and schedules work, and which plans include them.

Status: Not tested yet. We have not used either agent for this page, so there is no winner and no score of our own. Sources were checked on 2026-10-31, and Anthropic changes these pages often.

The short version

Claude Code and Cowork are both Anthropic agents, and Anthropic says they run on the same engine with the same Claude models. The difference is the workspace around the model.

Claude Code is for software. It works in a repository: it reads the code, edits files, runs commands and tests, and opens pull requests, from the terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or the web.

Cowork is for knowledge work that ends in a file: a report, a deck, a spreadsheet, a memo. You point it at folders and connected apps, describe the outcome, and come back to finished work for review. Since September 2026, Anthropic has been folding Cowork into the main Claude app, so on many accounts it is no longer a separate tab.

Claude Code Cowork
Who it's for Developers in a codebase. The FAQ calls it writing, debugging, and shipping code: it plans, writes, runs tests, and opens pull requests. Research, analysis, documents, and other multi-step tasks. You set the goal and review the result. The product page includes marketing, sales, and legal examples.
Where it runs The terminal on macOS, Linux and Windows; IDE extensions for VS Code (and Cursor) and JetBrains; the Code tab in the desktop app, on a local folder or a cloud GitHub session; the web at claude.ai/code; and Slack. In the cloud by default, on Anthropic's servers, from web, desktop and mobile. It reaches files on your computer only through the desktop app while that app is online.
What it works on The repository: edits, commands, tests, commits, branches, and pull requests. Diffs show in VS Code and the desktop app. Jobs can run for hours or days. Folders and tools you choose, including Word, PDF, spreadsheets, decks, images, and code files. Connectors can open more. A desktop browser can open sites and forms.
How it acts In the terminal it asks before file changes and commands; Anthropic says auto mode is now the default on Pro, Max and Team. The desktop Code tab can approve each change, accept edits, or plan first. The default is to ask before an action, with a looser check-in you can turn on. You choose folders and tools. Deleting needs approval. Enterprise admins can require a fresh approval every time and turn off "always allow."
Scheduling and background Cloud scheduled tasks (formerly routines) keep running with your computer off and can start from an API call or a GitHub event. Desktop scheduled tasks run on your machine. Schedule a task for any cadence and it runs unattended, including after you close the laptop. Tasks that use local files need the desktop app open. Big projects are split into chunks that run in parallel.
Skills, plugins, connectors, MCP Skills, hooks, CLAUDE.md instructions and MCP servers. CLAUDE.md, settings and MCP servers carry across Claude Code's surfaces. Plugins bundle skills, connectors and sub-agents for a role, such as finance or legal. Connectors reach apps like Slack and Google Drive.
Plans that include it Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise; not Free. A Claude Console account works too, billed as API usage. The Cowork page lists Pro, Max, Ultra, Team standard and premium seats, and Enterprise. Per the architecture overview, Cloud Cowork is in beta on Team when an owner enables it; Enterprise admins can turn cloud sessions on or off separately from local desktop Cowork.
Usage limits Shares the plan's usage limits with chat: a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits on paid plans. Uses your plan's limits. Anthropic says agentic tasks consume more capacity than regular chat.

Prices are left out on purpose. Current numbers are on Anthropic's plans page.

What changed in September 2026

On September 16, 2026, Anthropic published Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude. Instead of choosing between Chat and Cowork, you ask in any conversation and Claude brings in Cowork's abilities when a task needs your files. The article says it rolls out to Pro, Max and Ultra first, with nothing to turn on, and that Team and Free plans follow. An October 23 update says the unified experience is generally available for Claude Enterprise. Existing Cowork chats, projects, connectors and skills carry over.

So for many people the real question is no longer "Cowork or chat" but "Claude app or Claude Code". Claude Code keeps its own surfaces: the terminal, the IDE extensions, the Code tab and claude.ai/code. On accounts and organizations the change has not reached yet, Cowork still sits next to Chat in the desktop app.

When to use Claude Code

Use Claude Code when the work lives in a codebase. The overview lists the jobs: writing features, fixing bugs, running tests and lint, resolving merge conflicts, committing and opening pull requests. The terminal version runs locally and asks before it changes files or runs commands. The desktop Code tab adds visual diffs and can preview a local dev server, and a cloud session on a GitHub repository keeps going after you close the app.

If the work is mostly code but you also want it on a schedule, Claude Code has its own scheduled tasks, in the cloud or on your desktop.

When to use Cowork

Use Cowork when someone needs a finished file back, the steps cross several apps, or the job repeats. Anthropic's examples are a weekly report built from connected tools, reconciling a folder of spreadsheets, a first-pass review of a folder of contracts, and a memo built from a quarter of call notes.

Cowork asks before it acts by default, works only in the folders and tools you choose, and needs your approval to delete anything. When a task needs a website, the desktop app opens a built-in browser in a side panel, separate from your own browser. According to the architecture overview, cloud sessions run on Anthropic's servers by default; local sessions run shell commands inside an isolated Linux virtual machine.

Can you use both?

Yes. Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise list both, and Anthropic's guide to rolling out Cowork says Cowork "doesn't try to replace" Claude Code. A common split is Claude Code for the repository and Cowork (or the unified Claude app) for the documents around it.

Skills can be shared, with one catch. Anthropic's skills docs say Cowork sessions don't read the skills folder on your machine (~/.claude/skills/). They load the skills enabled for your claude.ai account, and so do terminal sessions where you sign in with that account. So a skill you want in both places belongs in your claude.ai account; a skill saved only in a local folder stays with Claude Code. More on where skills live in Claude skills in Claude Code.

How a personal agent like Grok Bot differs

Grok Bot is xAI's product, not a Claude mode. You message a Bot, and each Bot works on a persistent cloud computer with a browser, a filesystem and a terminal, so work continues while your laptop is closed. For how it lines up against Anthropic's tools, see Grok Bot vs Claude Code and Grok Bot vs Claude Duet.

How to choose

FAQ

What is the difference between Claude Code and Cowork?

Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for software work in a codebase: it edits files, runs commands and tests, and opens pull requests from the terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or the web. Cowork is for knowledge work that ends in a finished file, such as a report, deck or spreadsheet, built from folders and connected apps you choose. Anthropic says both run on the same engine and the same Claude models.

Do Claude Code and Cowork use the same model?

Anthropic says the same Claude models power chat, Cowork, Claude Code and Claude Design. Which models your plan includes is on Anthropic's pricing page.

Is Cowork still a separate app from chat?

It is going away as a separate choice. On September 16, 2026 Anthropic said Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, rolling out to Pro, Max and Ultra first, with Team and Free to follow. An October 23 update says the unified experience is generally available for Claude Enterprise. Until the change reaches your account, Cowork still sits next to Chat. Claude Code stays separate either way.

Which plans include Claude Code and Cowork?

Anthropic's pages list Claude Code on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise, and Cowork on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team standard and premium seats, and Enterprise. Neither is on Free. Cloud Cowork is in beta on Team when an owner enables it. Enterprise admins can turn cloud sessions on or off separately from local desktop Cowork. This page does not list prices.

Do my Claude Code skills work in Cowork?

Only if they are in your claude.ai account. Anthropic's docs say Cowork sessions don't read the skills folder on your computer. They load the skills enabled for your claude.ai account, which terminal sessions signed in with that account also load.

Should I use Claude Code or Cowork?

Use Claude Code when the work is in a codebase: reading and editing code, running tests, opening pull requests. Use Cowork when you want a finished document, deck or spreadsheet from your files, connected apps or the web, including on a schedule. We have not compared them on the same job, so this is not a ranking.
