Claude video skills and open-source tools: what each one does, and its license
Updated on
Claude video skills and tools have multiplied since Opus 5.5 came out, and lists of them spread fast on X. This page sorts the open-source ones into what they actually are, a renderer, a skill, a full pipeline or a prompt collection, and puts each one's license next to it, because the license is where they differ most.
Four kinds of tool
Most lists mix these up. They do different jobs:
- Renderers turn code into a video file. There are two in wide use: HyperFrames (HTML) and Remotion (React).
- Skills and pipelines sit on top of a renderer and teach Claude Code how to plan, build and check a certain kind of video.
- Knowledge skills teach animation craft, such as easing and timing, but render nothing themselves.
- Prompt and example collections show what others made and how they asked for it.
The renderers
| Project | What it is | License | Stars | Tested by us |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HyperFrames | Renders HTML, CSS and animation code to MP4, frame by frame. Ships a Claude Code plugin. Needs Node.js 22+ and FFmpeg. | Apache 2.0 | 70,545 | Yes, 2026-10-23 |
| Remotion | Makes videos with React components. Has an official page on prompting it from Claude Code. | Remotion License: free up to 3 employees, company license above | 66,620 | Yes, run V2 by Grok Bot, 2026-10-24 |
Skills and pipelines
| Project | What it makes | Built on | License | Needs | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remotion Agent Skills | Remotion's own best-practice skills for coding agents | Remotion | None declared in the repository | npx skills add remotion-dev/skills | 5,572 |

| huashu-art-motion | Art-style animation and explainer grammars, documented in Chinese | HTML animation | MIT | See its README | 4,989 |
The Remotion skill
The official Remotion skill is a set of Agent Skills that Remotion itself maintains. Remotion describes them as skills "that define best practices for working in Remotion projects," useful for agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Kimi Code or Cursor (Remotion Agent Skills docs). We used them in run V2 of our 12-video comparison, driven by Grok Bot: the install put 12 skills into the project's own .agents/skills/ folder, and the video came out close to the HyperFrames runs.
- Install:
npx skills add remotion-dev/skills. Remotion's Claude Code page instead runsnpx remotion skills addinside a new project made withnpx create-video --yes --blank my-video(Remotion with Claude Code). - Where to start:
/remotion-best-practices"encompasses all other skills"; Remotion says to use it if you are not sure which one to pick. - Narrower skills: among others,
/remotion-createstarts a project or composition,/remotion-markupgives "best practices for writing Remotion React markup",/remotion-studioopens a preview and/remotion-renderrenders a video or still. - What it does not change: anything the skill builds still renders with Remotion, so the Remotion License below applies.
Disclosure: we use parts of huashu-art-motion in our own Chinese-language video work.
Which of these we have run. On 2026-10-24 Grok Bot made the same 30-second explainer with Remotion's Agent Skills (run V2), claude-motion-design (V4), video-shotcraft (V5, a site promo), GSAP's skills (V7), huashu-art-motion (V8) and lemo-opuscar (V9), and Claude Code made it with HyperFrames (V0). Times, problems and the videos are in Remotion vs HyperFrames: 12 test videos. We have not run OpenMontage, video-use, anything2explainer, claude-code-video-toolkit or LottieFiles' skill.
Knowledge skills
These do not render anything. They teach an agent animation craft that applies to either renderer.
- GSAP skills (MIT, 16,982 stars): GreenSock's official skills for using GSAP correctly. HyperFrames uses GSAP by default.
- LottieFiles motion-design-skill (MIT, 2,456 stars): timing, easing and choreography principles, written for UI motion.
Prompt and example collections
- awesome-opus5-5-videos (MIT, 9,687 stars): a collection of videos made with Opus 5.5 and the prompts behind them. Its README links to a commercial remake site.
- PDoomVideo (2,521 stars): the source code of one widely shared Opus 5.5 music video. It declares no license, so read it but do not reuse it without asking.
The license is the real difference
- Apache 2.0 and MIT (HyperFrames, video-use, claude-motion-design, lemo-opuscar code, the knowledge skills): free for commercial use under their usual terms.
- Remotion License applies to anything that renders with Remotion. Individuals and companies of up to three employees use it free; larger for-profit companies need a company license. That includes video-shotcraft, claude-code-video-toolkit and the Remotion parts of OpenMontage.
- AGPL-3.0 (OpenMontage): if you modify it and offer it to others over a network, you must share your changes.
- PolyForm Noncommercial (anything2explainer): no commercial use without the author's permission. The author says the videos you make are yours.
- No license declared (Remotion Agent Skills, PDoomVideo): without a license, reuse rights are unclear. Ask before you copy.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Read each license before you ship.
How to choose
- You want the simplest start: a renderer plus its own skills, HyperFrames' plugin or Remotion's Agent Skills.
- You have real footage to edit: video-use.
- You want a ready style: lemo-opuscar for film styles, video-shotcraft for product promos, anything2explainer for explainers if your use is noncommercial.
- You work at a company of more than three people: check whether the tool renders with Remotion before you build on it.
About the numbers on X
Many of the most-shared posts listing these tools follow the same template and quote star counts that the GitHub API does not match. Use those lists to find tools, then check the repository itself. Star counts on this page come from the GitHub API on 2026-10-24 and will change.
FAQ
What is the difference between a renderer and a skill?
A renderer turns code into an MP4: HyperFrames renders HTML, Remotion renders React. A skill is a set of instructions and examples that teaches Claude Code how to use a renderer well. Most video skills sit on top of one of the two renderers.
Which of these can I use commercially for free?
Check each license yourself before you ship. HyperFrames is Apache 2.0. Remotion is free for individuals and companies of up to three employees, and skills built on Remotion carry that condition too. OpenMontage is AGPL-3.0, anything2explainer is PolyForm Noncommercial, and some repositories declare no license at all.
Do I need paid API keys?
Not for most. HyperFrames and Remotion run locally. video-use asks for an ElevenLabs key, and OpenMontage and claude-code-video-toolkit can use paid cloud services but say they work without them.
Are the star counts and X hype reliable?
Stars are a snapshot from the GitHub API on 2026-10-24. Many popular X posts about these repositories copy the same template and quote star counts the API does not match, so treat X lists as a way to discover tools, not as reviews.
