Can Claude Opus 5.5 make videos? What we tested
Updated on
People search for Opus 5.5 video because they want to know if Claude can make a video for them. You can make videos with AI this way, but not with Claude alone: Claude writes code, and a renderer turns that code into an MP4. We ran it once end to end. This page explains how it works, what came out and how to choose a renderer.
How it works
You describe the video to Claude Code. Claude writes the scenes as code: shapes, text, timing and animation. A renderer opens that code in a headless browser, steps through it frame by frame and encodes an MP4. Because every frame is a function of time in the code, the same project renders the same video every time.
That means two things:
- It is good at anything you could build on a web page: titles, diagrams, charts, captions, interface-style screens, and scenes keyed to a voiceover.
- It is not a camera. It cannot film a real product, place or person. Those come from real footage or screenshots placed into the video.
What our run produced
Why a Grok Bot routine can run and do nothing · made by Claude Code with Opus 5.5 and HyperFrames on 2026-10-23. The app screens are illustrations.
| Brief | One sourced fact, about 30 seconds, 16:9, narrated, no questions |
|---|---|
| Output | 30.6 s, 1920×1080, 30 fps, 3.0 MB, with voice, music and captions |
| Time | About six minutes from scaffold to finished file; the render took 38 s on a Mac mini (Apple M6) |
| Fixes needed | Four problems flagged by the checker, one more found by looking at the frames |
| Setup | Claude Code 2.1.295, claude-opus-5-5, HyperFrames 0.8.188 |
The step-by-step version, with every command and error, is in make a video with Claude Code and HyperFrames.
HyperFrames or Remotion
Both are made to be driven by a coding agent. We have run HyperFrames; the Remotion column is from its own documentation. Skills and pipelines built on top of them, with their licenses, are in open-source tools for Claude Code video.
| HyperFrames | Remotion | |
|---|---|---|
| What you write | HTML, CSS and an animation runtime such as GSAP | React components |
| Start a project | npx hyperframes init my-video | npx create-video --yes --blank my-video |
| Agent setup | Claude Code plugin: claude plugin install hyperframes@hyperframes | Agent Skills: npx remotion skills add |
| Needs | Node.js 22 or later, FFmpeg | Node.js and a coding agent |
| License | Apache 2.0; no per-render fees or commercial-use thresholds | Free for individuals, companies of up to 3 employees, non-profits and evaluation; a company license otherwise |
| Tested by us | Yes, once, on 2026-10-23 | No |
What you need
- Claude Code with Opus 5.5. It is the default model on Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise and the API, and needs Claude Code 2.1.280 or later (model configuration).
- Node.js and FFmpeg on your machine.
- A source for every fact the video states. The agent will draw and animate, but the facts should come from you.
- Optional: a voice and music. A video can also be silent, with large titles carrying the words.
Limits
- One run of one 30-second video is not a benchmark. Results will differ with the topic, the brief and the machine.
- We have not tested Remotion, longer videos or vertical formats yet.
- Tools and plans change. Every result on this page carries its test date.
FAQ
Can Claude Opus 5.5 make videos?
Yes, through code. In Claude Code it writes the scenes as HTML, CSS and animation code, and a renderer such as HyperFrames or Remotion turns them into an MP4.
Which should I use, HyperFrames or Remotion?
HyperFrames scenes are plain HTML and its license is Apache 2.0 with no commercial thresholds. Remotion scenes are React and it is free for individuals and companies of up to three employees, with a company license above that. We have only tested HyperFrames so far.
What plan do I need?
Claude Code's default model on Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise and the API is Opus 5.5, and it needs Claude Code 2.1.280 or later. Remotion notes that most coding agents need a paid subscription.
Can it make realistic footage?
Not by itself. The picture is whatever the code draws. Real footage, photos and screenshots can be placed into the video, but the agent does not film anything.
