Grok Bot avatar: how to set, generate or upload a Bot's picture

Updated on

Every Grok Bot has its own avatar, and only the Bot's owner can change it. This guide covers the three ways the official help page lists to set a Grok Bot avatar, what the changelog has added to avatars and when, and the methods people describe on X, including the Grokbot-style picture trend.

Status: Not tested yet. We have not run a logged test of the avatar editor, so the steps below come from the official help page and changelog, and the tips come from public X posts. Sources checked on 2026-10-24.

How to set a Grok Bot avatar

The official help page lists the same path for every Bot you own. Only the owner can change a Bot's name, picture and label, so these options do not show for a Bot someone else shared with you.

Open the Bot's details

Open the chat with the Bot and click the Bot's name at the top of the chat.

Click the Bot's picture

Click the picture in the details to open the avatar editor.

Choose Bot, Generate or Upload

Choose Set avatar

After you generate or adjust the picture, choose Set avatar.

On the phone, open the Bot's profile and tap its picture. The help page lists three choices: Select from Gallery, Generate, or Remove Photo.

What the changelog says about avatars

These lines come from the official Grok Bot changelog. Dates are the changelog's own.

Avatar changes in the Grok Bot changelog, checked on 2026-10-24
DateChange
2026-08-12Choosing a shape or color keeps a picture you added until you press Set avatar.
2026-09-01A Bot's avatar updates in the sidebar as soon as it changes.
2026-09-14A Bot can change its own title and the shape and color of its avatar.
2026-09-15Phone notifications show the Bot's picture.
2026-09-26When the image provider declines an avatar description, the editor explains why and suggests rewording it.
2026-09-30Avatars got a refreshed look with bigger eyes, and the editor added square, sparkle, clover, flower, heart, house and star shapes.
2026-10-07Your messages in a 1:1 Bot chat take that Bot's color. Setting Accent to Black in Settings, General turns this off.
2026-10-14Bots with any shape the editor offers can be shared as templates without changing their look, and animated avatars in the sidebar move more smoothly.
2026-10-22Bot pictures larger than about 3 MB now save.
2026-10-23For Halloween, a Bot can get a pumpkin shape when you create it or change its avatar. This needs Grok Bot 0.75.2 or later.

The official @bot account also said on 2026-08-18 that mobile notifications are grouped by Bot and use each Bot's icon. The docs add that when you duplicate a Bot on iPhone, the copy keeps the avatar. A clear avatar helps most in those places, where you see many Bots at once.

Colored chats only show when the avatar is a colored Grok Bot character, not an uploaded picture.@DanPMartini, 2026-10-16

Two points in that table go beyond the official pages. The changelog says a Bot can change its own avatar's shape and color, but not that it can set a picture it generated. The help page does not mention GIFs at all. Treat both as reports, not documented features.

The Grokbot-style picture trend

In September, @Multi_Serio_Ai shared a prompt for turning any picture into a character in the Grok Bot style. The post went out on 2026-09-18 (UTC) and had more than 13,000 likes when we checked on 2026-10-24. The prompt sits on a small web page linked from the post, with a copy button, to paste into an image tool.

Most people used it to restyle their own X profile picture, but the result works as a Bot picture through the Upload tab too. Going by a copy of the prompt that @emmyb0y posted, the key elements are:

For the full wording, use the original post's link rather than a copy. @HODL037 said they made theirs with ChatGPT and asked it to add color to match the reference picture.

FAQ

How do I change a Grok Bot's picture?

On desktop, open the chat with the Bot, click the Bot's name at the top to open its details, and click its picture. Choose the Bot, Generate or Upload tab, then choose Set avatar. On the phone, open the Bot's profile, tap its picture, and choose Select from Gallery, Generate, or Remove Photo.

How big can an uploaded avatar be?

The help page says the image must be smaller than 25 MB. The 2026-10-22 changelog also fixed a bug so that Bot pictures larger than about 3 MB now save. The help page does not give a recommended size or shape.

Can the Bot change its own avatar?

The 2026-09-14 changelog says a Bot can change its own title and the shape and color of its avatar. Some people on X say they asked their Bot to make a picture and set it. The official pages we read do not say whether a Bot can set a generated or uploaded picture by itself.

Can a Grok Bot avatar be animated?

The official pages we read do not mention GIF uploads. One X user said an animated GIF can be set, and another said a GIF uploaded in the Grok Bot app turned still while the same upload worked from the Bot's info in the Grok app. We have not checked this.

Why did my chat color change after I changed the avatar?

The 2026-10-07 changelog says your messages in a 1:1 Bot chat take that Bot's color, and you can turn this off by setting Accent to Black in Settings, General. One X user reported that colored chats only show when the Bot uses its colored character rather than an uploaded picture.

Which image model makes the best Grok Bot avatar?

We found no comparison. The help page does not name the model behind Generate, and the X posts we read share single results, not side-by-side tests.
